I was talking lately with an editor about the possibility of me doing a collection of essays for my third book, so had been reluctant to republish some of these older essays in case I wanted to use them for that. Maybe I still will, but in the interim I had an idea for a non-fiction book which will be more coherent and continuous. I feel very excited by it! Anyhow, here’s an essay I published in 2017/18 in Winter Papers. It’s very vulnerable. I don’t write like this anymore. I don’t know if I could, with the presence of a known audience, which I suppose is part of why one’s earliest writing before any career is often quite movingly naive or something. Anyway- it involves rape and sexual violence, in case you don’t want to read about those things.
